Character Information
Name: Buddy Armstrong
Series: LISA
Appearance: Buddy’s in-game sprite

Buddy is a young woman with long, messy dark hair and a scarred eye that she covers with bandages. She carries a large sword and wears a poncho and black leggings. Throughout the game, she frequently wears masks to hide her identity and avoid being attacked.

Age: No canon age is given, but Buddy is likely in her early teens.
Canon Point: The end of LISA: The Joyful
Canon History: Buddy’s wiki page

Buddy is the adopted daughter of Brad Armstrong, a former martial arts teacher and man with a seriously troubled past. She was born into a post-apocalyptic world called Olathe where all women were killed off in a disaster only known as the White Flash and, as far as anyone knows, she is the only living woman left on the planet. Brad found her when she was a baby and hid her away to try to keep her safe, raising her as his daughter with several of his childhood friends, whom Buddy knew as her ‘uncles’. As Buddy grew older, she became restless and curious and wanted to live her own life, chafing under her strict seclusion, her father’s many addictions, and his well-intentioned but extreme survival instruction. Shortly after her uncles told her about the important place she held in the world as humanity’s last hope for renewal, she was kidnapped. Brad pursued her throughout the hostile world, determined to find his daughter and protect her from the horrible people within it.

Ultimately, Brad does find his daughter, but the effects of his long addiction to a drug known as Joy overcome him and he mutates into a hideous monster. Buddy is saved from the mutated Brad by a gang leader named Buzzo and flees, and is eventually ambushed by raiders. She is saved once again, this time by a former gang leader named Rando, who decides to accompany her and keep her safe.

Buddy comes across a massive monolith called The List, which is inscribed with the names of the leaders of Olathe’s various regions, the strongest at the top and the weakest at the bottom. A scoreboard, in a manner of speaking, for warlords. Buddy decides that the only way for her to be free and safe is to be at the top of that list, and she vows to do whatever it takes to conquer Olathe. Rando warns her against taking this path, but she embarks on a quest to kill all the other leaders and take her place as the ruler of Olathe.

After killing several of the leaders, Rando can no longer support Buddy’s wanton destruction, and he leaves her in the middle of the night. She continues with her mission regardless, slaughtering her way across Olathe and killing anyone who stands in her way. After she kills Big Lincoln, the final name on The List, she finally meets her real father—Dr. Yado, the man who invented the mutagenic drug Joy and who also created a vaccine that would prevent its effects. With Buzzo’s help, Buddy, now suffering the effects of Joy usage herself, defeats Yado and the Joy mutants that he commands and obtains the vaccine. After a fatally wounded Buzzo explains many aspects of her father’s behavior and his own role in Brad’s suffering, Buddy inoculates herself against Joy and banishes the hallucinations of her dead relatives caused by her drug use.

Personality: Buddy is a curious, intelligent young woman who has been raised in a dog-eat-dog world. She is extremely headstrong and stubborn, refusing to change her mind or even consider alternatives after she’s come to a decision.  She has incredible focus for someone her age, setting herself to a task and never stopping until it is completed in full.  Under Brad’s tutelage, she learned that she had to be entirely confident and decisive in the world they lived in; he wanted to make sure that his daughter wouldn’t be weak, and Buddy is not weak. As many children are at her age, she can be capricious and prone to mood swings, and she can be quite cruel to the people around her, even the ones who help her. She treated Rando poorly while he was protecting her, frequently insulting him and refusing to acknowledge his needs; she would demand that he remain awake all night to keep watch over her while she slept, ensuring that he never got any rest himself and would not entertain any of his suggestions about her mission. The fact that he’s her only brother doesn’t seem to have much positive impact on her treatment of him.

The knowledge that she is the last living woman, and therefore is the only person capable of continuing humanity, made Buddy arrogant. She knows that humanity lives and dies with her, and she feels entitled to the support and obedience of those who would help her. There are very few moments when she expresses any sort of gratitude for what other people do for her. She delivers to them an ultimatum: help me or get out of my way, but don’t try to stop me.

And Buddy is truly unstoppable—Brad taught her how to defend herself with a blade and she uses that skillset without hesitation. Buddy murders her way across Olathe without pause or regret, frequently fighting alone against armed men who threaten to do terrible things to her. A girl doesn’t butcher her way to the top of The List without being tough, resilient, and determined, and Buddy is a teenage wrecking ball with a sword and a lot of rage.

Though she has many bad qualities and cuts a bloody swathe through Olathe with little regard for anyone but herself, Buddy has shown loyalty and concern. When she finally was reunited with Rando, it was after finding him strung up in a tree, injured and wrapped in barbed wire. The wire holding him up snapped under the strain, and she grabbed onto the line, preventing him from plummeting down a sheer cliff despite the fact that she was supporting a large man’s weight and was holding onto barbed wire. While she was holding Rando up, the man who put him there threatened to assault her, and she refused to let him fall, regardless of the consequences.

Abilities: Buddy has no supernatural powers to speak of, and her main abilities focus around survival and combat. She is skilled and ferocious with bladed weapons, including knives and swords, and knows how to use them effectively in fights and how to target an enemy’s weakest areas. Her training with Brad also likely included some amount of bare-handed combat, since he was a martial arts teacher, but she does not appear to have knowledge of the Armstrong Style, his signature move set. She was also raised in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, and thus has basic skills for supporting herself in that kind of situation—foraging, hunting, scavenging, and re-purposing. Buddy is also surprisingly strong for a pubescent girl, and she can carry the weight of a bodybuilder-sized grown man for significant periods of time, even when distracted or in pain. She is also skilled in the fine arts of decapitation and evisceration. Buddy does know how to read and write, but her general education is likely limited to whatever Brad felt it was necessary for her to know.

Inventory:

One large sword
One set of clothes (poncho, shirt, black leggings, boots)
One Rando mask (black, hooded mask with red skull face)
Bandages
Three doses of Joy*

The in-game flavor text describes Joy as: “A drug that makes you feel nothing. Use it in a pinch.” When taken, Joy restores health, makes Buddy critical on every attack, and reduces incoming damage for a set period of time. In LifeAftr, a dose of Joy could allow Buddy or someone else to shrug off significant damage and gain an increase to physical performance at the risk of debilitating dependence. It’s implied that multiple doses of Joy are necessary to experience the mutagenic effects, but Joy can also cause hallucinations and increase violent tendencies, and many of these adverse effects become more pronounced when in withdrawal. Buddy is immune to the mutagenic properties of Joy due to Dr. Yago’s Joy vaccine, but she is not immune to the addictive effects.
